Corfu's Rubbish Problem

I recently visited Corfu, and I was very sad to see how bad the rubbish situation had become. Hundreds of piles of smelly, rotting garbage have lain uncollected in the sun for weeks, growing higher each day. The residents who live near the overflowing landfill blockaded it, which meant that the island was almost buried in trash. I believe it has now reopened temporarily, at least for the next two months. It has been intolerable, even in the town centre, and it really spoilt my holiday. Some people tried spraying lime over the rubbish, others covered it with plastic sheeting, while others paid people to dump it in whatever hole they could find. Nobody seems to know where all of the refuse will go, as the Corfu landfill is already full. As much as I’ve always loved this beautiful island and its wonderful beaches, I won’t hide my anger and disappointment.
